There are several reasons why replacing traditional landlines with cellular devices makes sense in elevators and two-way emergency communications. This post will cover both the phone industry’s changing landscape and look at a trending security upgrade. A growing number of companies are turning to wireless communicators. The switch becomes easy to justify due to the substantial infrastructure savings without sacrificing the quality of transmission.
Alarm Detection Systems (ADS) has the in-house expertise to help customers establish proper emergency communications in their facilities. We work through each project’s design, installation, and testing phase, helping clients avoid costly missteps.
Understanding state and local code standards is a must when planning an upgrade project. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), International Building Code (IBC), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) all have standards for elevator and other two-way communications. Elevator cars and Areas of Refuge require a dedicated communications line enabling emergency personnel to establish contact within the building.
ADS can help you navigate through both local and national ordinances. By specifying the correct equipment, the first time, your business can save time and money on approvals.
The Sunset of Analog/POTS Phone Lines
On August 2, 2019, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted a forbearance request that removes many support obligations from Analog/POTS line providers. The deadline for new customers to obtain additional Analog/POTS services is February 2, 2020. After this date, customers may find difficulty acquiring new lines. Existing POTS line customers will need to transition these services to an alternative service solution by August 2, 2022.
The Wireless Adapter Solution
Rescue GSM provided by ADS is a 4G VoLTE single-channel analog cellular gateway specially designed for the Life Safety and Elevator industries. Facility managers know these products by other names, such as a wireless or cellular elevator and emergency phone adapter.
Due to their plug-and-play functionality, Rescue GSM is an ideal replacement for Analog/POTS phone lines. The units operate over reliable networks such as T-Mobile or AT&T. A voice-only cellular plan is required for the adapter to communicate.
As existing POTS phone lines grow more expensive each year, some customers could see a substantial savings per line when upgrading to cellular. The technical advantages are clear, as well. Wireless Adapters:
- Meet NFPA-72 Supervision Requirements
- Are FCC Certified and Safety Lab Tested for use in the USA
- Feature plug and play functionality and installation
- Include a smart battery pack with text messaging for use towards power-related issues.
